The history Of Halas 71
Old but graceful, Halas is one of the most precious historic treasures of Istanbul. Built in 1914 as a passenger ferry by the Fairfield Shipping Co. in Glasgow, Great Britain, this beautiful motor yacht was initially called M/S Reshid Pasha. Even though she was comissioned by the Ottoman Empire, she could not be delivered to Ottoman waters because of the ongoing World War One. She was renamed
Waterwitch by the British Government and dispatched to the Greek Island of Lesbos to serve as a Royal Fleet Auxiliary Ferry during the disastrous Anglo-French invasion of Turkey that began in 1915. After World War One ended in 1918 Waterwitch used by the British Allied headquarters for almost 4 years. In 1923, she was delivered to the newly-founded Turkish Republic, and her name was changed to Halas, which means salvation. For the next 65 years, Halas was used as a passenger ferry on the water of the Bosphorus.
After she was purchased by the Simavi Family in 1984, she underwent a four-year long restoration period as a result of which she was converted into a luxury motor yacht equipped with up-to-date machinery. She started to operate as a fully-licenced deluxe coastal cruiser in 1988 in Istanbul and Southern Turkey. In 2008 Halas was purchased by Mustafa and Caroline Koç and underwent a second major refit. She is
now a highly luxurious sophisticated coastal cruiser and offers an exquisite accommodation in her twelve cabins. She is also available for any memorable occasions. Halas has hosted numerous international VIPs including royalty and heads of state.
